Is Rob…Stinky?
People keep hearing the stories. Robert doesn’t wash his hair for weeks. He doesn’t shower. Rob smells? Are the tales true…or is it rumor and exaggeration again?
It doesn’t take much to get the tabloids into a frenzy these days, and the story of an attractive actor with less-than-stellar hygiene definitely does the trick. The gossip columnists had a field day after Ted Casablanca reported this unsourced story on E!’s The Awful Truth column:
What do Brad Pitt, Keanu Reeves and Robert Pattinson all have in common? Besides being completely doable, they all share one very yucky habit.
We got word from people hotly preparing to work up in Vancouver for New Moon that Rob P. causes quite the commotion on set. No, not from sneaking Kristen Stewart into his trailer. It’s much, much dirtier, folks.
“He stinks. I mean, it’s awful. He never showers, and it drives people on the set crazy,” dishes someone who works in very close quarters with Pattz. Apparently our shaggy-haired love never rinses that bod of his, as Keanu and Brad have famously not done, as well, during extended periods of their hunky lives. Like, ever. And it’s past the point of a little BO. “He completely reeks,” complains an annoyed crewmember…
Ouch. But it’s not the first time Rob’s washing habits have been questioned. Are the rumors true?
The Evidence
Back in November of 2008, Rob himself got the rumors going when discussing his hair with Baltimore’s Metromix.
That’s amazing. So, how long does it take to get your hair perfectly coiffed like that?
It’s the funniest thing. I just wear a hat a lot. I have so much residue crap in my hair from years and years and years of not washing it and not having any sense of personal hygiene whatsoever. Even today, I go into these things where I’m supposed to be this sexy guy or whatever, and I’m literally asking [the studio rep] if I get plumes of dandruff on me, can you just brush it off.
What did you learn by not washing your hair for six weeks?
That it starts to wash itself. If you don’t wash it for six weeks you won’t have to wash it ever again. Until it gets unbearable.
He relays something similar to Heidi Klum during his appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on November 26, 2008:
Rob: “Yeah, I don’t have a sense of personal hygiene or styling or anything.”
Jay Leno: “So how often do you wash it?”
Rob: “Ummm, I dunno. I gave up washing it awhile back.”
The interview started a round of discussions about Rob’s hair-washing habits, and he seemed to gleefully play with the rumors, as he told Gossip Sauce:
“Everyone’s like ‘Is it true you haven’t washed your hair in six weeks?’ I haven’t washed my hair in four years!” he said with pride.
Rob himself admitted he basically made it up in an interview with Germany’s Bunte.
Q: Okay, again with the hair. When did you last wash your hair?
Rob: A week ago, maybe.
Q: Really?
Rob: Yeah. I just made up a lot of stuff, anyway.
And Rob’s clothes? Rob and Twilight co-star Rachelle LaFevre sat down with MuchMusic on November 15, 2008. When they got to talking about who was most likely to wear the same clothes the next day, Rob was the clear winner. Rachelle braved it and took a nice sniff of Rob’s shirt. (starting at 4:17)
“A little musty,” she reports after taking a whiff. “Maybe a couple of days worth, but nothing hard core.”
GQ reporter Alex Pappademas, however, thought there was definitely some stench when he sat down with Rob for his cover story interview.
He slides into his chair, dressed all in black, with a weeks-old beard, hair crammed under a wool cap, looking like Justin Timberlake researching an off-Broadway turn as Terry Malloy. His clothes smell like he has recently purchased them off the back of someone less fortunate than he.
And Kristen Stewart commented as well during a French interview.
Rob: What is it you can’t bear about the person next to you?
Kristen: (sniffs) His smell.
Was Kristen just teasing? People.com reported the following after the E! story hit.
So maybe Pattinson is simply being a true actor and staying unkempt for his role as a vampire. “He smells great,” costar Kristen Stewart said before Twilight opened in November 2008. “It’s kind of an animalist thing that goes on. It went along with the movie, so it was perfect.”
A joke? Modesty? A little funk to get into character?
Fans have reported that Rob smells just fine. During the Austin Film Festival in October, 2008 a young girl named Maya got a chance to go give Rob a hug. Maya’s mother commented on Robert Pattinson Online.
Not to pound a point, but I have to share the original context of Maya’s response. Since she had gotten so close to him with the hug, I asked her, “What did he smell like?” that is when she gave me a swooning face expression and said, “Intoxicating.”
Other fan reports range from saying that Rob smelled “great”, like “fresh laundry” or ”Axe”, to him smelling like ”smoke”.
The Verdict
So, is a gas mask suggested when brushing by Rob to prevent a malodorous experience; or will his fresh, intoxicating scent merely dazzle you senseless? It’s a tough one to call.
In fact, heated arguments broke out at the Pattinson Anonymous offices as we went over the evidence. “Definitely busted!” “Definitely unresolved!” Screaming and hair pulling ensued.
Okay, now I’m exaggerating.
Although we were certain Rob washes his hair more than every “six weeks” (can journalists not sense a joke when they hear it?), and we didn’t buy the completely unsourced story in Ted C’s gossip column at all, there were several people who have commented on a less-than-fresh experience with Rob. And Rob himself has said he “doesn’t care”. Fan reports, though, completely disagree. There just may have been a kernel of truth to the rumors, but we sensed exaggeration as well.
Update
We initially labelled this article as Unresolved. We wanted resolution. We craved it. We even offered our own noses to do the dirty work (because we are that dedicated to the truth). The world was talking about Rob’s scent rather than his projects. All was not well in our happy world.
Aaaah, but Rob heard our pleas. He gave an interview to Moviephone which was released on March 27th in which he had the delightful task of discussing his bathing habits.
Is it true that, I don’t know if you saw this, but a source on the set of ‘New Moon’ said that you don’t smell good, that you don’t shower?
I haven’t even been on the set yet!You know the same thing went around about Zac Efron a while ago; that he doesn’t shower.
Really? He looks like he smells really good [laughs]. I also do shower.
Well, we were on the border with this to begin with, and that was enough to tip our scales. We’re giving Rob the benefit of the doubt and assuming he means he showers regularly…not, you know, on the first of every month.
We’re taking a deep breath and relaxing now…a deep, Rob-scented breath. Lovely.
We’re labelling this rumor BUSTED.
Ah, time for yet another movie. Rob is spending his early summer in and around the Los Angeles area shooting his next film, Water for Elephants. We can't wait for that one. And Eclipse promotion is calling his name as well. Happy June!As always...

I just love how when it is a slow “news” day, gossip writers will do anything to attract an audience. Going by what I have read, I would trust the experiences of fans over the so called “journalists.” Rob’s humor about his personal hygiene has made it into its very own entity, and these “writers” will play up that angle and add more salt than there needs to be. Besides, if you watch the whole interview with Kristen (small clip is shown above) you will find that Rob appears to be mouthing off the word “odor” to her when she was struggling to find an answer.
Personally, this story is as good as BUSTED!

rob smokes, people smoke, then sometimes the smoke is there, and it smells like, smoke. did gossip sites really hafta pick up teds un-sourced dirt and re-write it, like it was newsworthy? sad.

Great story and well balanced. I heard he smells good, too. I don’t see the ladies complaining or the fans who have met him.
well, i do NOT believe that he “stinks”…just don’t buy that at all. and that supposed person from the set that just went on and on about how bad he smells…totally unbelievable IMO. as far as those times that kristen and rachelle commented on it, i think they were teasing him. i think it’s kinda like the whole not washing his hair thing…it’s a joke that sorta takes on a life of its own. and as for the “sources” in the press that have supposedly said that he in fact stinks, they are anonymous and unsupported, right? but there have been numerous people that say he smells fine…nice even.
so in my mind as a fan, it IS resolved. he doesn’t stink. it would be nice for that to be “busted” but i can understand that there are ambiguous reports on this.
Yes, it was a close one, Sunshine. We understand and can appreciate everyone’s views on the topic.
The fact that the GQ author mentioned the smell of his clothing held some weight for us. He had no reason to lie on that point, and certainly wasn’t hugging or super-close to Rob.
And certainly, the “anonymous sources” story from Ted C didn’t hold any weight for us. But in the end, with all the various contradictory reports, we decided Unresolved at this time.
Future co-star refutals or statements from Rob on the subject can definitely change our decision. And, you know, if that offer of our own personal sniff-test is accepted…
Robert is great… I wish everyone would just leave him alone.

In the first place, I would say ‘consider the source.’ Completely anonymous, and from a place I don’t consider to be reputable, E!’s The Awful Truth. It should be called The Awful Lie. The whole thing sounds made up, from someone who is jealous of his popularity.
Rob jokes about his personal appearance because he thinks it’s funny, and because he wants to be taken seriously as an actor, not just a ‘pretty boy.’ He started all that not washing his hair baloney because he was becoming known for his hair. Finally almost driven to distraction, he chopped it all off. What does that tell you? He wants people to quit commenting about his hair. It’s the same deal with the jokes he makes about not bathing.
I guess fans need to address this. I’ve met him twice, and I’ve been as close as a fan can get (you know what a hugger he is; there are plenty of examples on youtube). Anyway, I was all up in his business and he was fresh as a daisy, and this was in the middle of the afternoon.
He showers. He washes his hair. I have seen the evidence with my own eyes at close range. This story was entirely made up, I’m sure of it. I can’t recall any fans ever commenting online that he smelled bad when they met him. And when he’s on the set, you can tell from his films he’s bathed. So he perspires. I guess that means he’s not really a vampire after all, he must be human. Who knew?
The examples you site with Rachelle and Kristen are interesting. He had been on a press tour with Rachelle, traveling, and he probably had worn that tee shirt before, but she didn’t say that it smelled bad, just that it smelled like him. As for Kristen, I haven’t watched that interview in a while, but I recall that they teased each other through the whole thing, and he had just said he didn’t like her personality. I think her comment was in response to that. His reaction is amusing, because he’s clearly surprised that she said that, and if he thought he smelled bad, he wouldn’t have been surprised.
That photo of his appearance in NY at the Planet Hollywood is one of the few showing him perspiring. Again, he was on a very hectic press tour at that time, and had already made a couple of appearances and interviews by the time that photo was taken. He probably forgot to pack anti-perspirant for the trip, and it shows. On one trip to NY he admitted that he had forgotten to pack any underwear and had to go out and buy some while he was there. Maybe it was the same trip, I’m not sure.
He’s been to a dozen countries, meeting thousands of fans in the last year, and it looks like he desperately needs a personal assistant to take care of the little details he’s too busy to deal with. I volunteer.

I just want to say that I have met Rob. I won and contest and was able to talk with him for about 5 minutes. I even hugged him and he didn’t smell one bit. He had a nice clean and fresh smell. And believe me, as close as I was to him, I would have smelled him if he smelled bad.

While I knew all along that those gossip sites really had NO sources to back up their claim, )and I knew based on people I know actually having MET him,) that it was all rubbish…it’s great that he “addressed” this crap as best he could. There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s amazing.
I’m sure he doesnt smell any worse then any of you sour cats assuming things about him.
Leave Robert alone, worry about you own problems.
If you don’t like him that great, more of him for his adoring fans.
But DONT Ridicule him. He’s done nothing but be the Hottest Vampire to hit the Big Screen EVER!

Wow Angie, I read this article completely differently than you. I see NO haters here at all or ridicule of Rob. I think this site is trying to really research the rumors out there and be the antithesis to the gossip sites.

Well, firstly, if he really did smell someone would probably say something to him. I’m pretty sure he has a family, and I’m sure he’s seen them recently, and if my brother/son was stinking up family dinner, I’d let him know.
And aside from him joking around, not washing your hair doesn’t necessarily mean you will smell…I know a couple people who don’t shampoo, just rinse with hot water every day and their hair is perfectly nice, and they don’t smell. Sting doesn’t use soap or deoderant, and I doubt he stinks.
I agree Love Story Lover! I find this site very refreshing. The stories are well written and non-biased. The rumors are stated in a clear manner, without the exaggerations. The facts are given, with full evidences. The conclusions are very thought out. It is nice to come to a site and not have to sift through the garbage. Keep it up PA!

That is what we do at this site. We investigate rumors and myths and try to get the accurate facts on Robert Pattinson. The rumor is already out there, and we did not create it. Addressing it makes the rumor a non-issue, which is why Rob addressed it. Did you read the article? We BUSTED the rumor.

i think however he smells has nothing to do with people liking him cause i think people should like him for who he is and we all have glitches but i dout its even true ~i dont belive half of the things that people say~

It’s been really irritating to read all those articles about Rob’s hygiene when there are so many, much more interesting things to talk about when it comes to him. He talks about his hair and that “He doesn’t really see a point in washing his hair” because he doesn’t care. “Just like he doesn’t really clean his apartment, because he doesn’t care”, He says ” His hair is just for you know hanging on my head, I don’t really care if it’s dirty or not.”
C,mon guys I love Rob just as much as you all do but in the GQ pictures his hair and body just look dirty. There are many pics of Rob where you can tell his hair is dirty, but no one wants to say it.
I personally don’t care. i stopped washing my hair everday too. It’s good to let the natural oils set in. Ha ha
the non-washing of the hair has been discussed. so he doesn’t wash his hair everyday. i don’t. it’s actually bad for your hair and scalp if you DO wash it everyday - as you sort of mentioned.
and the GQ photoshoot - well, any photoshoot for that matter - is NOT a good basis for any opinion. they have stylists who wash and/or style the celeb’s hair. with oh, say, some greasy / sticky hair products?
but if you don’t want to believe the latest words that Pattinson has spoken, that’s fine. just say so!

Here is my arguement when my friends say crazy stuff like, “How can you be so obsessed with this guy?? Haven’t you heard that everybody says he stinks?”
I respond with, “He smells fine from where I’m standing. And he looks even better!!”
during the filming of Twilight Laura Culpepper Mtv’s guest blogger even said Rob smelled like Axe. I too would love to volunteer my sniffer to be the final judge

I was googling and perusing the net when I stumbled upon this site…which I simply adore! Finally a site which tells the truth!
Rob has such a great since of humor that makes me just LOL! So far fame has not tarnished him and I hope it never does so. I applaud him for taking on different roles as I certainly enjoy seiing him mature as an actor. As his time permits I do hope he considers a music cd which would include Never Think, Let Me Sign and the piano improv during Twilight filming…just wishful thinking.
ps: I bet he has a sweet but yet masculine scent.
