Just the Facts: Questions About Rob’s Music

rp-guitar-outside-heathrow2

Our mailbox has been buzzing with a lot of questions about Rob’s music lately, so we thought we’d get his tunes rolling in our music player (always a good thing), start researching, and answer some queries about the wonderful musical world of Robert Pattinson.

Did Rob write the lyrics to Stray Dog and Broken?  If not…who did?

Both Stray Dog and I Was Broken were recordings grabbed from open mic nights.  Rob’s version of I Was Broken is from a performance in London in December, 2007.  He posted the audio of the two tracks, plus several others on his fomer Bobby Dupea MySpace.

I Was Broken is an easy one.  The song was written by Rob’s close friend and fellow musician, Marcus Foster.  Marcus has posted the lyrics for I Was Broken on his Music MySpace, if you want to take a peek.  He also recently performed the song at a gig in London and you can listen to it on YouTube if you would like to compare the two versions.

There is not much information about Stray Dog, but a source has indicated the song is an original by Rob.

- And yes, we do intend to do an article in the future addressing the Bobby Dupea Music MySpace.

The next question is a two-parter, so we’ll divide it up.

Do you know if Rob is going to release an album anytime in the near future?  I love the songs on the soundtrack, but he has so many more that are good, too.

rp-guitar-inside-heathrow-dec-20081It doesn’t appear Rob has plans to record an album anytime soon, but he may consider it, as he stated in this interview with MoviesOnline.

MoviesOnline:  You’ve got two songs in the movie.  Are you going to have a singing career?

Pattinson:    I don’t think so.  I might make an album but not through a record company or anything.  I’d like to do something independent.  I don’t care if people buy it or not.  I’d just like to have it just for myself so I can work with good musicians and stuff.

MoviesOnline:  Have you written a lot of songs?

Pattinson:  Not a lot.  All my friends are musicians in London.  They’re very talented.  My best friend wrote one of the songs on the soundtrack with another friend of mine, this guy Marcus Foster who did [it with] Bobby Long.  I went to school with Marcus.  He taught me how to play guitar and stuff.  He’s an amazing writer and singer and I thought to help somebody out.  I’ve got nothing to lose.

Of course Rob has also indicated that he doesn’t want to look like he’s taking advantage of his acting career to push his music, as he told the Los Angeles Times.

“That’s what I was scared about, it looks like I’m trying to get a music career out of it or something,” he said.  “I’ve never really recorded anything — I just played in pubs and stuff — and I really didn’t want to look like I was trying to cash in.  I hope it doesn’t come across as that.  I’m not going to be doing music videos or anything.  Music is my backup plan if acting fails.  I dont’ want to put all of my eggs in one basket.”

The good news is that there is a little bit of Rob on the way.  Rob sings three songs (as his character “Art”) on the upcoming How To Be soundtrack.

I read somewhere that [Rob] didn’t know, much less approve, for his music to be used in the movie or on the soundtrack.  Is this true?

htb-art-on-stagWhile Rob has commented that initially he didn’t know director Catherine Hardwicke had put one of his songs into an early cut of the movie until she played it for him, he definitely knew the songs were going to be on the soundtrack.  In fact, he re-recorded the songs specifically for the soundtrack, as he indicated to MTV.

Laura Culpepper:  Did you go into a studio to record specifically for the film?

Pattinson:  Yeah, that’s the only time I’ve ever been in a studio.  And I literally — since I’ve done all that stuff — haven’t picked up a guitar or even sung in the shower.

Culpepper:  Really?  So “Twilight” has basically ruined everything for you?

Pattinson:  No, I mean, I liked recording in the studio.  It’s just people listening to it — that gets embarassing.

Culpepper:  Well, I’ve heard the song and I liked it.

Pattinson:  Oh good.  But that’s not how it’s supposed to be, by the way.  I recorded it specifically [to fit the scene and] I had to make it really quiet so it fits into the background of the scene.  But the song is nothing like that.  [Sarcastically] So it’s way better in reality — the way I have it in my head.

As you can see from his comments, Rob definitely knew his music was going to be used in the movie.

I really like “Let Me Sign” and it definitely adds to the movie scene in TWILIGHT. It is a different sound but as I mentioned before in another website it is easy to feel oneself enmeshed/connected with the singer………….a man who is in love heart and soul. I also like “Never Think” but “Let Me Sign” is my favorite. I don’t care for “I Was Broken” as much — too repetitive and doesn’t really do much for me and I am an older listener but, well, it WAS the middle-aged women of America that made Josh Groban so great, so we know good music and a good singer when we hear it — a new sound that is very appealing. The sound of “Let Me Sign” is part of that portal that we see in Robert Pattinson in his finest moments of acting ….and singing — that magnetism that he projects…………that ability to transfer what his soul and mind are trying to communicate. I think that with time he will get even better.

Also hearing in one of his “youtube” interviews that he would like to play the character of Job in the Bible in a movie most of all of any individuals to portray — I had a feeling from the beginning that this young man was favored by the Lord. He never said anything except this but spirituality transcends even on any level and I always thought he was a very nice young man…. and he is. I think he has good things in store for him. And, I wish him the best of luck and blessings. He already has a beautiful physical appearance and just as important, a beautiful inward soul. Comes across in his music ……….. and his acting.

Rob Pattinson has a distinct voice and musical talent — however, I would like to hope that he will also take a look at the God-given talent of Josh Groban. A young man who became famous very early but held on to his very strong beliefs and strong value system. His voice is absolutely beautiful, inspiring and “raises the audience to stand on mountains” so to speak. You are left thinking of higher goals and values and beliefs. Almost like being in the presence of angels. He had a great love for his grandmother who helped him believe in himself. I would hope that young Rob with his talent does not go the way of egotistical young actors who just glory in their own popularity. The great actors (Heath Ledger) and musicians are those who are able to transcend their popularity and love greatly — they are an inspiration to us all and so we feel that with the love they have for others — and for us, their receivers of their creativity and talent - that what they do is very meaningful and reaches beyond their talent and popularity to leave us with something that touches our souls and hearts.

I have enjoyed all the music that has been available, however I found the Lullaby on the Myspace Music page to be my very favorite.
It is lovely. How would one go about getting a downloadable copy..I have tried several places, but I am not quite as much of a fan of the Lullaby listed on the soundtrack. Does not seem to move me the way Pattz’s version does.
