Just the Facts: Rob’s Role in “The Unbound Captives”

 rp-gq-outtake-2-cropped

According to reports in this week’s media, Robert Pattinson has signed for an upcoming movie starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz titled “The Unbound Captives”.  Let’s take a quick peek at the role.

The film is based on a screenplay by Madeline Stowe.  She was originally slated to star in the project.  Variety described the film:

She [Stowe] would have played a woman (now to be played by Weisz) whose husband is killed and her two children kidnapped by a Comanche war party in 1859. She is rescued by a frontiersman, to be played by Jackman. Pattinson will play the son.

Please keep in mind that we do not have official confirmation from anyone on Rob’s team that he has signed officially for the project.  Variety does tend to be accurate, however, and Hugh Jackman was asked about Rob playing the role and seemed to confirm it as well.  Once again, this article is based on information from the original script.  Details, names, and plot points can change substantially during the pre-production and filming process.  And since we do not wish to spoil the movie, we’re keeping this to some pretty basic information at this time, and limiting the information to Rob’s character only.

Well, with the disclaimers out of the way, let’s take a short look at Robert Pattinson’s role in “The Unbound Captives”.

Character Name:  PHINEAS

Age: The character is shown first at age 10, then again at approximately 17

  • As indicated in information published on the internet, Phineas was kidnapped as a child and assimilated in a Comanche tribe.
  • Phineas (all descriptions here are of the character at age 17) is described as having long hair and pierced ears, presumably in the 19th-century Comanche style.
  • Virtually all of his lines are in Comanche.
  • The character’s Comanche name is Tsomo, which means “bead”.
  • Yes, he rides a horse…bareback.  He rides quite a bit, actually.
  • Although the character does have a few flirtatious scenes, this is not a romantic-type role.
  • The older Phineas is in the latter parts of the script, perhaps the last third.  It is definitely a supporting role.
  • Our source describes the character like this:  “Phineas is pretty fierce.  He’s been raised as a warrior.  He can be silent and standoffish, but he can throw a bit of a fit, too.”

That’s a pretty basic character breakdown.  Our source felt that the role was definitely a different one for Rob and would be physical, challenging and complex.

We can’t wait!

Thanks for finding out this information. Fans crave any details on Rob’s roles. It sounds like a fantastic role. I’m thrilled Rob is testing himself so much. Is it ok to ask a few basic questions.

Q1. Is the other kidnapped child a daughter? and is she (or he) in the film for the same amount of time as Rob’s character.

Q2. Is it possible for your source to say if Rob’s character fights the white settlers

  2. toastie says:

    Hi

Many thanks for the character description. While the source says he’s in the last third of the film is he in that last third a lot or is this more of an extended cameo.

  3. becca says:

    Cheers for this.

Is the child’s role substantial. In other words do you see the child develop into the Comanche for 2 thirds of the film.

Is there a brother or sister involved throughout the film?

  4. ruth says:

I;d like to know if Rob has any good scenes with Hugh or Rachel? Im not after details just your sources view on whether they are good scenes.

Does he have any meaty relationships with other characters in the film or is he a bit of a loner?

Thanks for doing this page. Its very kind of you.

If the role described is accurate, it seems a bizarre step from his new leading man persona to this. While rob does like variety in his roles, I think Remember Me is more what you’d expect after his success in Twilight.

  6. Bellanieve says:

Interesting role…I think, the GREAT actors always try to stretch the envelope and so this character certainly does. This seems to follow what Rob is after and has mentioned in interviews. Good for Him!
He is going to have to learn some GOOD HORSEMANSHIP for this…I can’t wait!

The Cast seems great ,too. Ms. Stowe is wonderful…I think I’ve seen all her movies and loved her performances!!!

  7. helen says:

    A few questions from me.

Will Rob’s character have a ‘wife’ and children.

Will he need to be able to use a bow and arrow or is this all gun based.

Will he wear a warriers long head dress in any scenes in the film

It sounds like a Wonderful opportunity for Rob. With all the other films that he’s signed up to do before this one is to start shooting, he’ll be pushing it to fit in the training. Horseback riding let along bareback & shooting bows and arrows. It’ll stretch his abilities.

I love Rob for taking on this role. He needs to show he isnt just a romantic leading man. I;m very excited about this role. Seeing him ride bareback will be enough to make me swoon!

I look forward to seeing him as a fierce warrior.

  15. Susan says:

Sounds a lot like an old John Wayne movie called, “The Searchers” with Natalie Wood being the kidnapped child.

I am not surprised that Rob would sign on for this given the people involved and the scope of their prior work. It has the potential to be epic. Also, we have to remember that he agreed to do this preTwilight. If this does go into production at the end of the year, that puts 4 movies on his plate this year; a supporting roll may be just what he wants at this point especially if this is in the action/adventure type genre.

  18. I would love to see Rob in this role. Part of what I love about Rob is that he doesn’t do what you expect him to. He’s continuing to show his huge range as an artist and I love it.

Hmmm…. i sense a bare chest coming on :-) Time to hit the gym methinks! Seriously, sounds like an interesting film! I’m still trying to assimilate Hugh Jackman AND RP on the screen together …. squeeee

thanks for posting. i cant wait to see what rob is like and to have hugh jackman in the same movie!! so good and rachel weisz is a gorgeous actress.
i had a thought the other night that maybe, his character gets taken when he is ten and then he gets introduced into the tribe and then his mother see’s him when he is older[17] and she has been looking for him for all those years.

whatever happens is going to be GREAT.

  21. barbara says:

towards the end of the second book ” New Moon’ Edward says he will turn Bella into a vampire only if she marries him, in the movie, however , he offers a different ultimatum, I thought this new director was going to stick closley to the book, has Stephanie Meyer agreed to this? I hope this is untrue, Catherine Hardwick stayed true to the book and did a great job on such a small budget

Dear Administrators……..if you are going to remove the last comment, please to take out all of my comments. Good luck to all of you and to Rob Pattinson but I prefer to not comment anymore in this website……… if movies are going to be made about the Indians but no help comes from rich, rich Hollywood and actors, then I don’t think I want to comment anymore about them or the actors. We measure our greatness by our love for others…….and if you turn from helping your fellow man, then what do you have……….
